AVA nominations for AVA Awards now open

Nominations are requested from AVA Divisions and SIGs for the following AVA Awards to be presented at the Annual Conference in May 2016 in Adelaide.

The Gilruth Prize

The Gilruth Prize is the Association’s most prestigious service award and was established in 1953 to commemorate the name of Dr JA Gilruth, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne, the first Chief of the Division of Animal Health of the CSIRO, administrator of the Northern Territory and an outstanding veterinary authority.

The recipient is selected from nominations by the Division Awards Committees to the National Awards Committee for ratification by the AVA Board.

The Kesteven Medal

The Kesteven Medal is awarded by a Committee consisting of the Presidents of the AVA and the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, the Chief Executive Officer of the AVA and an independent member.

The award is for distinguished contributions to international veterinary science through technical and scientific assistance to developing countries.  Unsuccessful nominees from the previous two years are automatically included.

Fellows

Fellows are members who have made outstanding services to the Association and who are elected as Fellows and who have all the privileges of membership. Recommendation for the election of Fellows is made from Division Awards Committees to the National Awards Committee for ratification by the AVA Board.

Meritorious Service Award

               The Meritorious Service Award is made to members, or other persons who are not eligible for membership of the Association, who have rendered special or long term service to the Association, its Divisions, Branches or Special Interest Groups. Selection is from Division Awards Committee to the National Awards Committee for ratification by the AVA Board.

Honorary Member Award

Honorary Members of the Australian Veterinary Association are eminent persons (non veterinarians) who have been appointed to that position as a token of respect for their services to the Association in particular or to the veterinary profession in general.  They enjoy all the privileges of membership in the Association and the Divisions, except those of voting and holding office.

All other nominations should be submitted as outlined in the award descriptions and contain the following information:

§  Name and contact details of nominee

§  List periods of service as office bearers in branches, divisions, special interest groups, committees, or any other AVA groups.

§  Outline any other activity or service to the Association or its members or to the veterinary profession.

§  Nominations are to be no more than one (1) page in length

Nominations for all the above awards should be in writing to your group by Friday 13 November 2015 and recommendations are to be sent to the National Office by Friday 20 November 2015.
